Josh and Ruth

Today Grey High School was lucky enough to have to amazing speakers come to our school and talk about their life's and about the challenges they went through!!The first speaker we had was Josh he talked about how he got cancer twice and other illnesses, he talked about going around the world and seeing people who had nothing and I think that, that really got to some of us like he talks about how he wanted to just die and how unlucky he felt but then going around the world seeing these little kids with nothing no shoes, no toys, no food and water and yet they were still happy, they had huge smiles on their faces and for him and us to just stop and think about everything we have and how we just take it all for granted! Our second speaker was Ruth croft she's a famous track runner who never thought her life would end up the way it did, she talked about how nothing comes easy for anyone, she talked about how her life had gone from wanting to run and then hating running and then moving and then travelling and then running and yes there was a lot of running stories! She talked about her success and her failures and I found it ver

Temawheratangaongakuwhaotuterakiwhanoa

Everyone has a different opinion on the name of greymouth, many people that live here are fine with calling it greymoyth but some people want it to change back to the original name which is Temawheratangaongakuwhaotuterakiwhanoa. Most people think that the name greymouth was given to us by the European settlers because of the wide river mouth but the real name given to us by the Maori settlers that did come before the European "settlers".The purpose of the survey i'm making is to get people's opinions on what they think our name should be.In the survey

Spaghetti Graph!

This week in our maths class we did an experiment to measure the strength of spaghetti.I expected the spaghetti to just break!

To do this experiment Set up two desks that are the same height. The edges should be 20 cm apart. Use tape to anchor the ends of the spaghetti. Make a hook from a paper clip. Turn a paper cup into a small bucket. Use string for the handle. You might wrap tape around the hook so it does not cut like a knife.Add weights such as coins into the cup gently until the spaghetti snaps. Do not drop the coins into the cup as the impact and force of the weight will snap the spaghetti!Test the tensile strength of different numbers of strands. Each time you test the spaghetti find the mass of the cup and coins.Record the measurements.

graph shows that as we expand the amount of spaghetti we also enlarge the mount of weight it will hold!We found that one strand of spaghetti can only hold a sertant amount of grams but if we had used five strands of spaghetti can hold more and that relates to people in real life like the more people you have around you the stronger you are!

Michael Jackson

About Micheal Jackson

Michael Jackson with his children Michael Jr (known as Prince) and Paris- Michael in 1999 - Album on Imgur

Michael Joseph Jackson was an American singer, songwriter, and dancer. Entitled to being the "King of Pop", he is well known worldwide as an inspiration to many as being a cultural singer and person he also had a very open personal life, But there were some stories that not many people knew like his father Joe Jackson was a very strict father He didn't allow any of the kids to have many friends and he often whipped the children if they didn’t listen. He wanted them to stay out of trouble and live a successful life and lucky for Michael and Many of his siblings  grew up to be very successful. Michael is also known for his hard work, music, dance, and fashion, along with his appearance in the Jackson 5.I personally don’t have a favourite Michael Jackson song as I personally don’t really like him as a singer. What do you think made Michael so popular in the 90's?Lots of people ask how did Michael Jackson die but I think the real question is why did he die?Why do you think Michael changed his skin from dark to light?

  • He had two pet llamas on his ranch called Lola and Louis

  • The album Thriller was number one on the Billboard Chart for 37 weeks.

  • He was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana

  • He was the best selling artist in the United States for 2009, the year of his death

  • He was best known for his album thriller that was released in 1982

  • He died on the 25th of June 2009

  • He has three kids 2 boys and a girl there names are Michael (named after him), Paris and Prince

  • Jackson's father forced him to play music

Kuta and Kiekie

Yesterday in our class (Nga here Kahikatea) we were lucky enough to be able to spend a whole day at Lake Ianthe. To get there it took us about an hour and a half by car.

The first thing we did was say a karakia just to thank the atua for giving us life!Once saying the karakia the boys got right into the water and started grabbing the Kuta but they made sure to grab it from the bottom/roots so that they didn’t snap. They tried to get the longer one’s as Matua Joe told them that the longer they are the better!

Once grabbed what we needed we started to collect Kiekie, to get the kiekie one of us had to go into the bush but not to far, once Morgan got far enough in to get the good pieces by good pieces I mean he started to get the ones that were high up as they got more sunlight then the ones that were closer to the ground!Morgan also tired to get the darker ones as they are better for weaving. After getting the kiekie we started to strip of the pieces we didn’t need, so by that I mean the part that we needed from the leaves  where the white bits we had to strip everything other than the white bits.

We are going to dry out all the plant life that we collected yesterday to do some weaving and learn the background about Kuta and Kiekie so we can have more knowledge about the plants and papatuanuku!

Hangi report :)

 Fried bread

Last week our class (Nga Here Kahikatea) was privileged enough to prepare a hangi at the whare Manaaki which is located across the road from the Salvation Army, The whare manaaki is a community place run by Eli Maiava one of the parents at Grey High and a big part of our community! When we got there, Eli welcomed us with big arms and a loving personality. Once we had finished introducing ourselves, we split into groups and had about 2-3 adults helping each group. I voluntarily chose to be in the fried bread group with one of my best friends Autumn. In our group we had me, Autumn, Haley, Tiana and Matua Joe. We also had Ms Quick observing for a bit.

An important part and I might just say the most delicious part of the hangi is the fried bread, the fried bread is consisted of Flour, Baking powder and water while adding all these ingredients over and over again it will start to form a sticky blob while we left the blob to dry out a bit we started filling the frying pans with oil and lots of it but we had to make sure that it was on the second highest setting it had which in our case it was four while we left the oil to heat up we started cutting the blobs into squares by the time we finished that the oil was ready, we started putting five squares of bread in each pan we had to wait until they had risen and turned darker by that time we would flip then over to get both the sides ready!

After making about six batches we were finally done then we had to divide the bread as we wanted some then and some for the hangi after doing that I saw the bread for about two seconds and then they were gone!
